Symbols & Codes
Symbols of Business
Symbols (in the conventional context that applies here) are ...
printed, written or displayed signs that are used to represent an operation, element, quantity, quality, relation, unit of measurement, phenomenon, or descriptor, as in mathematics, science or music.
Specifically, when we refer to symbols that are used in business, they are often used to represent or stand for something else, usually by convention or association. We use the reference as a distinguishing symbol, as a mark of, or as "a symbol of" something. Symbols when used in this manner, are able to acquire significance.
UPC and QR Codes
Universal Product Code (UPC) and QR Codes are similar, except UPC's can only represent numbers. QR codes however, can be used to represent data, such as text or web addresses. Quick Response (QR) codes were originally developed in Japan in the early nineties, but the recent popularity of smartphones has placed a new emphasis on QR technology.
Newer smartphones now include the scanning software necessary to utilize this technology, but older smartphones can download an application that enables QR functionality. Consumers simply aim a camera phone at a QR Code, and automatically get hooked up to ways to read reviews and leave comments, or to obtain coupons when they visit a place of business.
QR Codes Marketing Campaigns
Using QR Codes technology, a marketing campaign can be built based on placing codes on digital signage, websites or social media sites, print brochures, business cards, name badges, or even coffee mugs and refrigerator magnets. Literally, anything that the codes can be printed on or displayed with, can be used in this type of campaign. All types of businesses can use them too. When these codes are placed in front of consumers, they can simply scan the code to get taken to special offers or discount coupons.
